Gokarna is one of the rare places in South Asia where the rugged Western Ghats plunge directly into the turquoise waters of the Arabian Sea. The famous 5-Beach Cliff Trek links five distinct crescent beaches across red laterite bluffs, granite headlands, and scrub forests.
The 5 Beaches on the Trail
- 1. Gokarna Main Beach: Expansive pilgrim beach adjacent to the ancient Mahabaleshwar Temple.
- 2. Kudle Beach: A wide sandy crescent famous for laid-back shacks, beach volleyball, and stunning sunsets.
- 3. Om Beach: Shaped naturally like the sacred Hindu 'ॐ' symbol, featuring rocky outcrops and cozy cliffside cafes.
- 4. Half Moon Beach: A tranquil cove accessible only on foot or by boat, surrounded by verdant hill slopes.
- 5. Paradise Beach (Full Moon Beach): A secluded, untouched rocky cove where fresh coastal breezes and pristine waters reward every hiker.
Never attempt the cliff trail between Om Beach and Half Moon Beach in flip-flops or smooth-soled sandals. The laterite rock surfaces can be slippery from salt spray. Wear sturdy sneakers and carry at least 1.5 liters of drinking water per person.
How to Return from Paradise Beach
You don't need to hike all 7.5 kilometers back under the midday heat! Local fiber boats wait at Paradise Beach and Half Moon Beach, offering a scenic 15-minute coastal boat ride back to Kudle Beach or Om Beach for a nominal fee.
